Prescriptions
IMPORTANT PATIENT NOTICE
As of Monday 18th July 2022, Welshpool Medical Practice no longer accepts repeat medication requests by telephone.
This development has been put in place to ensure that our Dispensary Team can focus on providing the best possible service for our patients.
You will still be able to order repeat medications in a number of other ways as shown below:
- Drop off your repeat medication slip through our Dispensary letter box 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Order via the NHS Wales App.
- Or in person, Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm
- Order via your usual Chemist
Thank you in advance for you co-operation. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Suzanne Pembroke, Dispensary Manager/Pharmacy Technician.
What is a Repeat Prescription?
A repeat prescription is set up by your GP to allow you to obtain certain medication(s) without having to see/speak to them. These are usually medications you are required to stay on long term for medical conditions that are monitored regularly by the practice.
The Practice Dispensary
If you live 1 mile away from a chemist (as the crow flies) you are able to obtain your repeat prescriptions from the practice dispensary in Welshpool or in our branch surgery in Guilsfield.
We are open from 8am-6pm Monday – Friday.
You may order through your chosen chemist as normal.
Dispensary Notice for Patients - Changes
The practice Team dispenses over 9000 items per month. Owing to the high volume of prescription requests, we are unable to continue to offer a 48 hour turn around service. In anticipation of your help we will be aiming to deal with requests within 4 working days.
Your patience and co-operation is much appreciated.
Ordering a Repeat Prescription
We require 4 working days to get repeat prescriptions processed and ready for collection – we recommend ordering when you reach your last weeks worth of medication.

What to do if you run out of medication outside of GP Surgery opening hours?
If you run out of medicine outside of your GP surgery's normal opening hours and need some urgently, here are some ways you may be able to get supply quickly, even if you're away from home.
If you have a prescription
If your local pharmacy is closed, you can get your medicine from any pharmacist with your prescription, as long as it's in stock. Find other nearby pharmacies and their opening hours here.
If you do not have a prescription
If you run out of prescription medicine and do not have a prescription with you, you may be able to obtain an emergency supply from a pharmacist without a prescription. You should take an old prescription/repeat slip or the medicine packaging with you to the pharmacy, if you have it.
You'll be assessed by the pharmacist to find out:
- If you need the medicine immediately.
- Who previously prescribed the medicine (to make sure they're a trusted source).
- What dose of the medicine would be appropriate for you to take.
The pharmacist needs to know the answers to these questions before they can supply a prescription–only medicine, without a prescription, in an emergency. They will keep a record of your details, the medicine they provide and the nature of the emergency.
If the pharmacist is not satisfied that the medicine and dose is appropriate for you, they may not supply the medicine.
The pharmacist may provide an emergency supply of up to 30 days' treatment for most prescription medicines, with these exceptions:
- Insulin, an ointment, a cream or an asthma inhaler – only the smallest pack size will be supplied
- The contraceptive pill – only enough for a full treatment cycle will be supplied
- Liquid oral antibiotics – only the smallest quantity to provide a full course of treatment will be supplied
Only a limited range of controlled medicines can be prescribed in an emergency, such as those for epilepsy (phenobarbital). Many commonly used controlled medicines, such as morphine or diamorphine, cannot be supplied without a prescription by a pharmacist in an emergency. However, a pharmacist is the best person to speak to, even in this situation.
Boots and Rowland's
If you live within a mile of either of these chemists you must nominate one to collect from where your repeat prescriptions will be sent from the practice to be dispensed.
You can still place your repeat prescription order at the practice, but please indicate on your repeat slip which chemist we are to send it to.
Medication Reviews
As long as you attend for reviews and check ups as agreed/invited by the practice then your repeat prescription will remain active.
You may receive a note with your repeat prescription indicating that you are overdue a review or check up. Your medication will not be stopped, but please make the necessary arrangements so your repeat prescription can be updated accordingly.
